Once you see lots of people with morbid and mortal conditions day in day out, your outlook on life is bound to change.
How, you ask??
Some become more spiritual, caging themselves in the reinforced comfortable steel bars of belief, faith, and religion, and more importantly, fear of the unknown and then some others go wild, realizing life is really short, and any one can just off anytime.
Everybody falls within the spectrum, fitting snuggly somewhere between the two extreme ends, shy and afraid to leave their comfort zone.
But there is a third category of people, people who look at things objectively, and act as such. People who would not be confined by stereotyped ideals, beliefs, people who are willing to explore, to understand the unknown and not shy away from it.
Magellan was definitely a part of this group. One who chose to challenge the ideals, to confirm the norms, and to discover new things. If he hadn’t sailed round the world, he most definitely wouldn’t be fulfilled, unlike the rest of the world, fit snuggly between the two ends of the spectrum I mentioned at the beginning of the essay, and showing no signs of discontent.
I’ve been opportuned to meet and interact with many people, to understand their ideals and the way they think, and the things I’ve heard, are really inconceivable. Most adults already know, through experience they have come to find out where they belong, even though they camouflage as spiritual ones or as carefree folks, they have already explored both spectrums, and deep down they understand. And they live as such.
Who then is this article for, it is for teen-agers. And I don’t mean the teenagers, the text-crazed age group known for rash decisions and naïve lifestyles, I mean youths that are still aging teenly. And what is this particular message I’m trying to pass across?
EXPLORE.
A lot of people have shallow mindsets, inability to think beyond the already layed out plan society has stereotyped for us. Examples of comments without depth that I’ve heard within the past year or two..
‘I’ll not take alcohol because it’s scary’
‘Islam/Christianity/sango-ism is the only true way to paradise and no other’
‘people that smoke are crazy’
‘why would anyone have sex before marriage?’
‘you must always go to your place of worship’
‘I’ll not marry anyone younger than me’
And on and on and on.
LOL, really?
A lot of statements and thoughts like so can and WILL hinder you from trying new things in life, and if you still hold those stereotyped beliefs and you eventually go against them, you would become one big sac of self-hatred. And how do you know what you think is shallow and tunnel-visioned?
When the reason you give to defend your shallow statement, is also shallow. And you would almost always know, even though you would try desperately to convince yourself that it is reason enough. You are only as deep as your reasoning.
If you die now, would you wish you’d done it? If yes, then go do it. And enjoy life. They say you need to have a near-death experience once, for you to realize how precious, free and non-judgmental life is. Well, put your death in perspective now, and relax it really isn’t weird or occult, the ability to envisage our death is what makes us better than most animals anyway.
And if not, well, stay caged. Because believe me, anyone can go, anytime. All life has to do, is to roll her dice. This article may have left a bitter taste in your mouth. If it did, then the article is probably directed at you.
